Evidence based vs. measurement-based care: A review of in-treatment outcomes, treatment dropout and longitudinal follow-up in large national behavioral health sample
Measurement-based care enhances treatment outcomes but is rarely used in behavioral health (Jensen-Doss et al, 2018; Oslin et al., 2019. Further understanding how mental illness severity and recovery relate to continuity in behavioral health treatment can lead to mental health service delivery optimizations that improve care quality. After discharge, longitudinal follow-up, measurement, support and intervention in real-time may improve rates of relapse found in behavioral health post treatment when the risk of relapse is highest (Beaulieu et al, 2021; Lye et al. 2020; Carter et al., 2004, McFa...Read morerlane et al., 2008). Our study aimed to evaluate the association between treatment dropout and baseline depression severity, as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the association between treatment dropout and baseline recovery, as measured by the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS). Our data includes 17,277 patients treated at Discovery Behavioral Health, a large behavioral health care provider, with discharge dates between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. Higher baseline suicidality, self-attitude, and depression PHQ-9 factors were associated with reduced risk of dropout, as were lower willingness to ask for help, not dominated by symptoms, and goal/success orientation scores from the RAS.
