Exploring the Connection between Eating Disorders and Attachment Insecurity/Maladaptive attachment styles

Addressing Eating Disorders is a difficult and complex process. Comorbidity contributes to the complexity of identification of needs and care. An often-overlooked aspect of eating disorder treatment is the client's attachment origin and style. Understanding if a client is struggling with insecure attachment should be considered regarding treatment approach and interventions. By teaching the patient and support team to recognize and address insecure attachment as part of the eating disorder, we are incorporating key components to the recovery process that have historically been overlooked.

...Read morehe goal of this presentation is to train the Professional how to identify and define insecure attachment styles and understand how they relate to eating disorder recovery. Information will be presented that facilitates a decrease in shame and misunderstanding between the patient and support team members around attachment insecurity and mental health stigmas. Diagnoses such as Borderline or Dependent Personality disorder will be discussed in relation to the clinical presentation of eating disorders. Learning Objectives

  • Define eating disorders and attachment insecurities (maladaptive attachment styles).
  • Describe how eating disorders and attachment insecurities present clinically.
  • Utilize at least 3 interventions to treat patients who struggle with both an eating disorder and maladaptive attachment style.
  • Identify at least 2 ways to maintain patience, boundaries and self-care with patients that struggle with attachment insecurity.
  • Describe the connection between consequences of attachment insecurity and eating disorder symptoms (example: negative body image, lack of body acceptance, impulsivity, impaired support system, conflictual interpersonal relationships).
