Hey, That’s My Scope! Bridging the Gap Between Dietary and Therapeutic Processes

When working with clients with eating disorders, of all ages and at all levels of care, there can be a tremendous amount of cross-over topics and/or discussions, leaving clinicians wondering if they are staying within their own scope of practice, or even being effective in working with their clients. Can a therapist talk about food and exercise? Can a dietitian talk about trauma or body image? To constantly feel as though you are saying “that sounds like something to discuss with your therapist” or “that sounds like something to discuss with your dietitian” can be disempowering. While therapis...Read morets aren’t often trained in food or exercise, and dietitians aren’t often trained in therapeutic practices, there are things that can be done or said in all topics by both disciplines. Topics discussed in this presentation will include the scope of practice for both therapist and dietitians, and explore the blurry lines between the two. This will also include clinical models and their dietary adaptation, such as the use of DBT in both therapeutic and dietary sessions. These topics will provide consistent language to use in sessions, and the opportunity to discover collaborative ways to work together in creating a more effective treatment program for your clients leaving you feeling more empowered in your work to establish appropriate boundaries and support each other as a treatment team, strengthening the therapeutic work and lessening the splitting that can often happen when the treatment team doesn’t work together.
