Recognizing Eating Disorder Behaviors in the Substance Use Disorder Community
For some time, the substance use disorder community has seen a rise in the incidences of patients with co-occurring eating disorders or disconnected eating and exercise. Sometimes, the impact of eating disorders on SUD treatment can sabotage their sobriety intentions. Addressing the needs of those patients who have eating disorders or disconnected eating is important—and so is their sobriety. Many of these behaviors are not recognized or are muted due to the nature of their SUD work.
This presentation will help answer why eating disorders present during SUD treatment, how they can present, and how disconnected eating or exercising are contributing and part of their control shift. We will also discuss when it is acceptable to keep a patient in treatment, and when and why they may need a higher level of care.
